Long Lifespan in Genesis ---

Long Lifespan in Genesis

Long Lifespan in Genesis Why was there such long lifespan in Genesis?  I’ve heard theories saying it was because their food was more nutritious than ours.  Other people say that there was a cloud that protected people from the harmful rays of the sun, thus giving them longer life.  Are these long lifespan real or myth?   Adam died at age 930 (Gen 5:5) Seth died at age 912 (Gen 5:9) Enos died at age 905 (Gen 5:11) Cainan died at age 910 (Gen 5:14) Mahalaleel died at age 895 (Gen 5:17) Jared died at age 962 (Gen 5:20) Enoch was 365 when God took him (Gen 5:23-24) Methuselah died at age 969 (Gen 5:27) Lamech died at age 777 (Gen 5:31) Flavius Josephus Explains Long Lifespan in Genesis I don’t normally look to sources outside of the bible, but Josephus tries to explain the reason for such long life in Genesis.  Josephus was a Jew and a Pharisee.  Here’s what Jews believed 2000 years ago: Antiquities 1.3.9 (by Josephus) – “(104) Now when Noah had lived three hundred and fifty years after the Flood, and that all that time happily, he died, having lived the number of nine hundred and fifty years:(105) but let no one, upon comparing the lives of the ancients with our lives, and with the few years which we now live, think that what we have said of them is false; or make the shortness of our lives at present an argument that neither did they attain to so long a duration of life; (106) for those ancients were beloved of God and [LATELY] made by God himself; and because their food was then fitter for the prolongation of life, might well live so great a number of years; and besides, God, afforded them a longer time of life on account of their virtue and the good use they made of it in astronomical and geometrical discoveries, which would not have afforded the time of foretelling [THE PERIODS OF THE STARS] unless they had lived six hundred years; for the Great Year is completed in that...

How To Sin 101 ---

How To Sin 101

How to Sin 101 What is sin?  How can I do it?  Sin is not the same for everyone.  Some sins are universal, but other sin really depends on what covenant you are in.  For example, is it a sin to eat pork?  If you are circumcised into the Law of Moses, then yes, it is a sin.  If you aren’t in Moses’ covenant, then eating pork isn’t a sin.  Let’s go on to see exactly how to sin.   What is sin? Great question.  The answer that the bible gives is that, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness” (1John 3:4).  “All unrighteousness is sin…” (1John 5:17).  Having said that, is it possible to sin if there is not law?  “Before the law was given, sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death (which is the end result of sin) reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.” (Rom...

Storms NOT From God ---

Storms NOT From God

Storms NOT From God Not every storm comes from God.  Just because God is able to cause a storm does not mean that every storm is from God.  Hurricanes come, but they aren’t necessarily God’s judgment.  I am an insurance agent.  Even before I began doing home insurance, it always annoyed me that hurricanes were called “acts of God” in insurance terminology.  In Mark 4, there was a storm, but God did not allow the storm.   Mark 4:37-40 – “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.  And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?  And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.   And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful?  How is it that ye have no...

Jonah Died In the Whale

Jonah Died In the Whale First note that this is not a greatly supported teaching…  Like most bible believers, I once believed that Jonah miraculously lived in the belly of the whale for 3 days before he was spit up onto land to warn the people of Nineveh to turn to God.  The more I studied the situation and the language, the more I realized that it’s a strong possibility that Jonah died in the whale and was resurrected. Jesus & Jonah Died and Went to Sheol Jonah is a type of Christ.  Here’s what Jesus said: Matthew 12:39-40 – “But he (Jesus) answered and said unto them (religious leaders), An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the...

Death – Where We Go When We Die

Death – Where We Go When We Die What is the death and afterlife process? What happens after a person dies? Where do we go after we die? Traditionally, most people believe that when a person dies, they either go to Heaven or they go to Hell.  That is the simplest way to look at it, but it’s more complicated than that, and I think it’s worth understanding.  There are 3 different points of time to consider.  In the past (OT times), everyone died and went to Sheol, which contains a safe side and a side of fiery punishment.  Presently, a person dies and their spirit goes to either Heaven or Hell.  In the future, our spirits will come back into our bodies, we will be resurrected, and those in Christ will live with Jesus on earth (not Heaven), while those outside of Christ are sent to the Lake of...

Evolution vs. Creationism

Evolution vs. Creationism I am a creationist, and I’d like to share why.  The bible and science do agree with each other, but first, we must distinguish the facts from the theories.  Yes, people have made up theories for both science and the bible.  For the bible, theories include that the earth is 5,000 or 6,000 years old (something the bible never says).  For science, theories include the Big Bang Theory and the Theory of Evolution.   Why Christians Can’t Believe In Evolution Today, many people who claim to believe in Christ do not believe in the literal creation as it is written in the bible.  They try to believe in both the theory of evolution and the bible.  Here’s why a person can’t believe in Christ and...

My Testimony – How I Became A Christian

My Testimony – How I Became A Christian My name is Kent Owen, and this is my testimony.  I spent most of my early childhood playing Nintendo, drawing pictures, and stuff like that.  I was raised in the Silverhill First Baptist Church and stayed there until I was about 11 years old.  During that time, I can honestly say that I learned very little about God.  My parents made me go to Sunday school, bible schools in the summer, and even choir practices.  I hated it all, and I would have rather been at home playing games or drawing on a piece of paper.   My Second Church When I was about 12 years old, my family changed to a nearby church in Silverhill, the Covenant Church.  I was a little more involved at that church.  I ran the sound system there, and a girl (also a classmate) invited me to the Wednesday night bible studies.  I didn’t get a lot out of it, but it was a lot more that I ever got before.  I remember the youth group talking about Marylin Manson, Montell Williams, and other teenager related stuff during the bible studies.  Meanwhile, I did actually pray to God about once a month or two, just to update Him on my life as if He didn’t know what was going on with...

Homosexuality – Why Jesus Never Talked About It

Homosexuality – Why Jesus Never Talked About It Jesus never talked about homosexuality.  Some people think He thought being gay was alright and that He wasn’t against it because He never directly condemned it.  However, He also didn’t say anything was wrong with bestiality (having sex with animals), but we know that’s not right (Ex 22:19 & Deut 27:21). First, understand that homosexuality isn’t a feeling, but an action.  God doesn’t judge anyone based on what they feel, but on what they do.  If a person feels gay all their life but doesn’t do anything gay, then there’s no way they could be judged as a gay person.  If someone loves football but never picks up the ball, then they’re not a football player.  If a Christian “loves Jesus” but doesn’t do what He says to do, then they’re really not Christian (Luke...

Musical Instruments – Wrong In Worship?

Musical Instruments – Wrong In Worship? There is a group of Christians who believe that using musical instruments in worship is wrong, namely the Church of Christ.  Of course, after worship services they will get in their cars and listen to music on the radio, but I guess that doesn’t count because it’s not worship.  I’d like to point out some verses that may shed some light on this by pointing out the truth of the matter.   Their argument is, “musical instruments can be distracting and interfere with genuine worship.  God wants to hear our voices, which is what He made, and not manmade instruments.”  What I would first like to point out is that there is no bible verse that says such a thing.  If a person prefers to worship God by singing without instruments, that is fine… but when they say that worshiping God by singing with instruments is a sin, we have a...

Suicide: An Unforgivable Sin in the Bible?

Suicide: An Unforgivable Sin in the Bible? Does the bible say that suicide is an unforgivable sin?  Before I start this topic, I’d like to say I have had family, a first cousin in fact, kill himself.  This is a personal topic to me, but I feel that it needs to be addressed.  Why does it need to be addressed?  Because if a person thinks that suicide is a reasonable way to go then there is nothing discouraging them.  If I could kill myself and end up in heaven, then it would sound like a reasonable option to me, since I’d be rewarded with paradise for killing myself.  Here are a few people I remember who killed themselves in the...

Forsake All, Sell Everything, Leave Family, & Follow Jesus

Forsake All, Sell Everything, Leave Family, & Follow Jesus There’s a lot of things that churches preach that aren’t in the bible.  There’s also a lot of things in the bible the churches don’t preach.  How can you tell the difference?  You trust In the preacher to give you something from God, and you take him for an example of how to be like Christ, saying to yourself, “if anyone is a Christian here, it must be the preacher.”  This same preacher who has a pretty nice house, a car, and a family preaches with his lifestyle more than with his sermons.  It’s something drastically different from the lifestyle of Jesus, His apostles, and the early church than what you see...

Satan – How He became the god of This World

Satan – How He became the god of This World Satan is the god of this world (2Cor 4:4, John 12:31, Eph 2:2). He showed what he owns while tempting Jesus saying, “I’ll give you all the kingdoms of the world if you bow down and worship me” (Matt 4:8-9). Psalms 24:1 says that the earth is God’s because He created it, but God is not the god of this world, therefore there is a conflict of interest between God and Satan. Dominion Given to Man How did the kingdoms of the world become Satan’s? God created the world (Gen 1:1). At that time, the world was in God’s dominion. After He made man, He gave dominion to Man (Gen 1:26). It does not say that He shared dominion with man, but gave it to him. When He gave it to man, it belonged to man and not to God anymore. God couldn’t take dominion back from the man because “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” (Rom 11:29), which means that when God gives a gift, He either can’t or won’t take it back. I guess you could say that when Adam received this dominion, he became the god of this...

The Book of Job – God Did Not Give Satan Power

The Book of Job – God Did Not Give Satan Power The common belief that God gives power to Satan by permission to test our faith or teach us some lesson is one reason that many believers in Christ have departed from the faith or resent God. When a preacher preaches at a funeral saying, “God took this child, mother, grandmother, friend, or whoever.”  Did he mean that God caused or allowed the accident?  It leads a Christian to believe that one day everything is ok and the next day God tortures a person for reasons above our understanding.  Consider this, if you had a baby who contracted cancer and suffered for years before her death, thinking God was in control, you may hate God, but if you hate God you will go to Hell.  Understand the severe emotional conflict that this teaching inflicts on the body of Christ!  If God is controlling your life and your life is in a mess, then who’s to...

What Is the Baptism of Fire? Is It Good or Bad?

What Is the Baptism of Fire? Is It Good or Bad? Many teachings as well as songs imply that the baptism of fire is a good thing.  After reading John the Baptist’s comments, I’ve just recently considered that it may be a bad thing, and would like to know what you think as well. 1) Fire always symbolizes punishment/condemnation in the gospels. If you do a word search for “fire” in the gospels, it always refers to Hell (except for the epileptic boy who would fall into fire {Matt 17:15}, when Peter was warming himself over the fire when he denied Jesus {Mark 14:54}, and the fish that was cooked over the fire {John 21:9}).   2) John the Baptist is the only person to mention a baptism of...

Baptism – Why ONLY Immersion Is Right & More ---

Baptism – Why ONLY Immersion Is Right & More

Baptism: the Do’s and Don’ts In Matthew 3:6 the people were baptized of John in Jordan, confessing their sins. [baptized] – G0907 = to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i. e. fully wet).  It NEVER means to get partially wet, therefore “sprinkling” is not “baptizing”.  Why does it matter?  Because being immersed into water symbolizes death and burial with Christ (Rom 6:4 & Col 2:12), sprinkling doesn’t. Why Immersion Is Baptism In Acts 8:27-39, a rich eunuch traveled on a chariot and learned the gospel from Phillip, and though it’s not written, it’s understood that Phillip explained that to be saved, the eunuch must be baptized.  The rich eunuch must have been carrying food and water on his chariot for the journey since he was traveling all the way from Ethiopia to Jerusalem.  So when he learned of the requirement to be baptized, why didn’t he say to Phillip, “Hey, I’ve got some jugs of water in the chariot that you could sprinkle me with”?  BECAUSE THAT’S NOT BAPTISM!  He saw a body of water (Acts 8:36), they went DOWN INTO the water (Acts 8:38), Phillip “immersed – G0907” the eunuch, then they CAME UP OUT OF the water (Acts 8:39).  The language and situation all imply submersion and never even hint of sprinkling or that sprinkling is acceptable even...

God Is NOT Everywhere & Does NOT Know Everything

The idea of God being everywhere at once and knowing all things from eternity past, present, and future is not an idea that is supported by scripture. This is sometimes referred to as God’s omnipresence and foreknowledge or omniscience. To prove that He is not everywhere, all we must do is find one place where He is not. To prove that He does not know everything, all we must do is find one thing in scripture that He doesn’t...

What the Bible Says about Hell ---

What the Bible Says about Hell

What the Bible Says about Hell This is a list of bible verses about Hell.  I’ve tried to arrange them in order from Genesis to Revelation, but first, I would like to use these verses to answer some common questions about Hell.   What Is Hell? Hell, also known as Sheol in the Hebrew language and Hades in the Greek language, is a spiritual place created by God.  Its function is to receive the spirits of the dead and to hold demons captive.  There are at least 2 sections in Sheol.  The abyss, which is perhaps the gulf that seperates the 2 sections (Luke 16:26), is a place that demons fear to be (Luke 8:31).  The first section is called Gehenna, a fiery place of punishment made for Satan and his angels (Matt 25:41). The spirits of the wicked dead go there (Luke 16:23) and wait for the resurrection of the unjust (Acts 24:15).  The second section is a safe place refered to as paradise (Luke 23:43) or “Abraham’s Bosom” (Luke 16:23).  It is believed that the spirit of every just person, such as Abraham and David (Ps 18:12), went to the safe section of Sheol as prisoners where they waited for Christ to descend to them and set them free by taking them to Heaven with Him (Ephesians 4:8-10).  Now, when a just man dies, his spirit goes to God (2Cor 5:8) in Heaven (Rev 6:9) where they wait for the resurrection of the righteous (1Th 4:16).  In the bible, Hell has been called Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, The Pit, The Grave, & The...

What Does The Bible Say About Reincarnation?

What Does The Bible Say About Reincarnation? My definition of reincarnation is when a person dies their spirit comes out of their body and is reborn into another body of a human, animal, fish, bug, plant, etc.  It seems that if a person led a good life, they are reborn as something better than what they were, and if they were bad they are reborn as something worse.  Whatever that “better” or “worse” thing may be is undefined, and who knows, maybe cows are better than humans, so if you’re a real good person, maybe you’ll be lucky enough to be reborn as a cow.  No wonder so many Hindus and Buddhists are vegetarian (at least they don’t eat beef); they might be eating Uncle Fred or some other family...
